Eternals star Richard Madden says he was ‘fat and shy’ as childhood photos unearthed

Scots actor Richard Madden is unrecognisable in throwback photos unearthed from his childhood, which the award-winning actor has said was a difficult time due to bullying.

The 35-year-old actor starred in hit BBC show Bodyguard and played his latest leading role in new Marvel blockbuster Eternals.

However, has opened up about being “fat and shy” growing up, reports Hull Live.

The media outlet reports that the Golden Globe Award winning actor shared a photo from his teenage years, including one with musician Toyah Willcox.

The pair are understood to have appeared together in children’s comedy series Barmy Aunt Boomerang, which ran on the BBC between 1999 and 2000.

The Game of Thrones alum previously spoke to British GQ about growing up in Elderslie a small village in Scotland, which he said was a “difficult place to be.”

Richard told the magazine that his high school was “really rough” and that he was bullied a lot. The Bodyguard star said that growing up was “just constant humiliation really.”

In another interview, as reported by the Sun in 2018, the actor said that he had been “fat and shy” as a teenager.

He commented: “I was a 38 inch waist when I was 12. I didn’t wear denim until I was 19 because denim is hard to take up. My mum couldn’t take my jeans up.”

The actor has come a long way since his youth, having had a number of high-profile projects over the last decade.

His performance in the series saw him nominated for a number of awards, and he won a Golden Globe Award and National Television Award for the role.

Richard’s other credits include the Elton John biopic film Rocketman, war film 1917 and the historical series Medici.

His most recent project is Marvel’s Eternals, which sees him reunite with his former Game of Thrones co-star Kit Harington – having played brothers in the HBO series.
