Inside secret plan to save Royal Family from nuclear strike including yacht, ferry and bunkers
In the event of a nuclear strike – a level three ‘catastrophic emergency’ – there’s a top secret escape strategy in place to keep our senior royals as safe as possible.
Buckingham Palace is well prepared for any worst case scenario, and ‘Operation Candid’ would be rolled out in the event of a bomb ever hitting the UK.
In 1968, the UK Government created ‘Operation Python’ to safely evacuate our Prime Minister, key cabinet members, as well as the Queen and other senior royals in groups to different parts of the country, as reported in OK! Magazine.
At the time this plan was made, the secret locations included yachts at sea, and even a specially-adapted passenger ferry in a Scottish loch.

During the Cold War there was just one city-sized underground shelter in the Chiltern Hills (Corsham, to be precise), with enough room for the Prime Minister, a few hundred folk and plenty of supplies, plus all the communication equipment needed to rebuild our country.
But as the shelter’s location has been known for years, it’d be the first place a hostile nation would attack and it wouldn’t survive an intercontinental ballistic missile attack.
According to a nuclear war expert, the Queen and senior members of the monarchy including Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince William and Kate Middleton will still be dispersed away from London.
The I reports that Julie McDowall, who hosts the Atomic Hobo podcast, claims the original idea of spreading our leaders wide still stands.
And, she believes, it remains the safest way to make sure we’d still have a government after a nuclear attack.
It’s a top secret plan drawn up by the Cabinet Office, Civil Contingencies Secretariat, Ministry of Defence and diplomatic protection – so it’s all very official.
All we know for sure is that the direct line of royal succession will be protected at all costs, ensuring the Queen, Charles, William and his family – including Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis, are top priority to keep safe.
For years, Windsor Castle housed a Cold War-era bunker that would have been used to shelter the Royals in the case of a nuclear attack, The Mirror reports.
Underneath the staterooms of the castle, a coal cellar was converted into a nuclear bunker when the Cold War fears first started to spread, following the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
A bomb pressure indicator was actually fixed to the castle’s lawn, allowing scientists to monitor the blast wave and see how far the devastation had spread.
However, the top-secret hideaway was demolished during the devastating 1992 fire, which ravaged a large portion of the historical building.
