Alec Baldwin speaks in public for first time since fatal film set shooting

Alec Baldwin has spoken in public for the first time since the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a film set earlier this month.

The 63-year-old actor had previously given statements on the incident on his Twitter account.

But he felt compelled to speak out on the roadside in Vermont yesterday in a bid to stop photographers following him and his family.

During the interview, Baldwin described Halyna as his ‘friend’ and described the incident as a ‘one-in-a-trillion’ event.

He said: “She was my friend. The day I arrived in Santa Fe, I took her to dinner with Joel the director.

“We were a very very well-oiled crew shooting a film together and then this horrible event happened.”

When asked about the investigation, Baldwin responded: “I’m not allowed to make any comments, because it’s an ongoing investigation.

“I’ve been ordered by the Sheriff’s Department in Santa Fe – I can’t answer any questions about the investigation, I can’t.”

Alec was joined by his wife Hilaria, who became angry after the photographers failed to remember the name of Halyna Hutchins.

“Halyna, her name is Halyna. If you spend this much time waiting for us, then you should know her name”, she responded.

Alec then went on to say he is in constant contact with Halyna’s family following the incident and has met her husband and son.

Speaking about Halyna’s husband, he said: “He is in shock. He has a nine-year-old son, we are in constant contact with him because we’re very worried about his family.

“We are eagerly awaiting to find out what the Sheriff’s Department’s investigation has yielded.”

Baldwin is said to have cocked and fired the gun, which also injured the film’s director Joel Souza.

Investigators in New Mexico, where the shooting took place, have said that there was “some complacency” in how weapons were handled on the movie set, but it is too soon to determine whether charges will be filed.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza has said 500 rounds of ammunition – a mix of blanks, dummy rounds and suspected live rounds – were found while searching the film set.

Detectives have recovered a lead projectile they believe the actor fired.

Testing is being done to confirm whether the projectile taken from Mr Souza’s shoulder was fired from the same long Colt revolver used by Baldwin.

The FBI will help with ballistics analysis.

Mr Souza, who was standing behind Ms Hutchins, told investigators there should never be live rounds present near the scene.

District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said investigators cannot say yet whether it was negligence or by whom. She called it a complex case that will require more research and analysis.
