Tom Walker says he owes Kate Middleton royalties after Christmas duettom

Tom Walker is singing high praise for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge after the duo created a star-studded performance for Christmas.

The Scottish singer-songwriter was joined by Kate Middleton for a surprise rendition of his song For Those Who Can’t Be Here as part of the ITV show Royal Carols: Together At Christmas which aired on Christmas Eve.

The audience and viewers at home were stunned to see the Duchess take to the stage to perform on the piano while accompanying the 30-year-old chart topper.

After the festive special aired, Tom’s single has shot up the charts and the humble star admitted he feels like he owes Kate some royalties.

He told The Sun : “It was so well received, I probably owe her royalties now. She sent me a letter thanking me for the opportunity but it should be me thanking her.

“The song has jumped 57 places in the charts. It was a wonderful experience and she was so warm. She made the effort to thank all the musicians but it was us who felt so grateful to be part of something so special.”

He continued: “We met for a rehearsal beforehand and I gave her a recording of the track without the piano part so she could practise. It was obvious she had taken the time to perfect it. She was brilliant.”

Kate and Tom’s performance was the brainchild of the Duchess after the two met at a charity event in support of Action On Addiction – where Tom was performing his single Leave A Light On.

ITV viewers took to social media on Christmas Eve to praise Kate’s surprise performance.

One wrote on Twitter after watching her play piano to remark: “Future Queen playing for Tom Walker. Absolutely amazing.”

Another tweeted: “Watching Catherine play the piano. One very cool Queen in waiting.”

A third wrote: “Is there no end to this lovely ladies talents, watching Royal Carols at Christmas on ITV and Kate is accompanying Tom Baker on the piano.”

While yet a further fan tweeted: “Great to see such an accomplished Kate playing the piano as she accompanied Tom Walker during ITV’s Royal Carols tonight. The way it was filmed it wasn’t all about her. Such a change from Meghan.”

Tom had previously told the Mirror that Kate was “quite nervous” during her first rehearsal “because she hadn’t played with another musician in a very long time”.

The pair sat on opposite sides of the room during the “very secret” practice session when Kate played the song around nine times and “nailed it”, according to the musician.

He added: “She was just so nice.”
